The third release in the annual German Federation series features Hamburg.
The federal states series consists of a total of 16 different €2 coins, each one bearing a unique symbol or building specific to the respective state. The series begins in 2006 and a new coin is minted each year, in order of the rotating presidency of the Bundesrat (the upper house of the German parliament representing the federal states).
St. Michaelis - popularly called Michel - is one of Hamburg's five main Protestant churches (Hauptkirchen), and the largest and most famous church in the city with its 2,500 seats. Its 430 foot baroque spire, entirely covered with copper, is a major landmark and a prominent feature of Hamburg's skyline. Dedicated to the archangel Michael, there is a large bronze statue standing above the portal of the church that shows the archangel conquering the devil. The present church is the third one to be built on this site. The first one lasted from 1647 to 1669 and was the church of the new town (Neustadt), which had been started in 1625 inside the new city walls. In 1687 the Michel became the fifth main church (Hauptkirche) and the new town (Neustadt) became a parish. That church was destroyed by a fire caused by a lightning strike on March 10, 1750. In 1786 a new construction designed by Johann Leonhard Prey and Ernst Georg Sonnin was completed. This is the church as we know it today. It was reconstructed twice in the 20th century, namely after catching fire in 1906 during construction work, and after the Allied bombings of 1944 and 1945. Since 1983, renovation is ongoing - first the spire and then the roof.
