    ABOUT US:
As owners of The Ark Workshop, we’ve been designing and building wildlife housing & feeders for over 30 years. We've been fortunate to have had many of our products sold in popular retail chains in the United States.  When creating houses or feeders, our primary focus is to create designs that will be used by specific wildlife.  Much research and time goes into that.  We’ve literally spent years refining every design.  We’ve found that there are certain features a house/feeder needs to have for wildlife to accept it, use it, and then return to use it again!  Through our personal experiences, thousands of customer correspondences, and years of research … we’ve discovered some valuable insights that have helped us create these wildlife-specific products.   Whenever possible, we always try to include a picture of the product in use so that you know that is has a proven track record. Thanks for considering our items and for visiting our shop.  We hope we can be of service to you today!  Mark & Jane.
    GROUND SOCKET DETAILS:
    Size:  3.5"deep x 6.5"wide x 31"tall
    Weight:  approx 15 lbs
Shipping discount when more than one ordered.
    NOTE PRODUCT USE:
The purpose of this ground socket to to help create a 4x4x8' post swivel system for a large birdhouse.  Customer will need to purchase a 4x4x8' post.  House and 8' post not included ...... ground socket only. The ground socket supports houses weighing approx 25lbs or less and mounted on an 8 ft post.  Use of a longer post and/or heavier house needs to be at the discretion of customer.  Socket may not be able to support heavier houses on longer posts in very high winds.  If needing a high wind system, please contact us for our 4' ground socket system that has longer side arms.  This listing is for our 31" tall system.
    POLE SYSTEMS & MOUNTING BIRDHOUSES:
So.....do you have a nice birdhouse but not sure how to mount it?  We have something that should be helpful.  First, birdhouse pole systems can either be metal flag-pole type systems or wooden 4x4 systems.  If the metal-type pole system telescopes, thus allowing you access to the house,  then those are effective for lighter, aluminum tin housing.  However, for heavier housing ..... a 4x4 post system is more effective because it can hold more weight atop the post.
Winds can be very strong up at birdhouse level and having a post system that can withstand those winds is important.  Also, some pipe-pole systems might start developing a gradual lean, over time, due to constant swaying during high winds.  The wood post system helps to avoid all that.  A wood post stands strong like a tree while also adding to the beauty of your yard.  Many people add a trellis to their wooden posts or get vines growing up them.  It is just another way to add a decorative focal point to your yard and garden.
    GROUND SOCKET DESIGN:
The 4x4 wooden post system that we have used over the last 25 years consists of 2 parts:
    1:
    a GROUND SOCKET and
    2:
a 4x4x8' post.  The ground socket is made of pressure treated wood and is cemented into the ground.  It takes approximately 3 days for the cement to properly dry & cure.  Then, an 8' post slides down into the ground socket.  Customer will need to purchase post separately.  The 8' post purchased will also need to have a couple of holes drilled through the bottom part of the post so that 2 long bolts can slide through the holes of the ground socket, through the 4x4, and then out the other side of the ground socket.  We include
    information
on how to do that.  Washers and nuts are provided so that you can tighten and squeeze the entire system together making it one solid structure.  When you need to clean out your birdhouse, you simply remove one of the bolts and the wooden pole will swivel/pivot on the remaining bolt.  Since the bolts are tightened well, the wooden post does not come swooping down to the ground.  You have to apply a little effort and pull the post toward you and ease it down at your pace.  It's a great feature and makes mounting a house (and getting it down) very convenient.  Refer to picture for clarification.
Over the years, we have set up many of these post systems for our neighboring customers.  We've dug many holes, poured alot of cement, and made sure that the pole systems were level and straight.  We want to provide you with the knowledge and insights we've gained through these experiences.  Although we cannot ship the long 4x4x8' portion of the system, we are making the GROUND SOCKET available for purchase.  The GROUND SOCKET is the most complicated part of the system and it will save you time and money by purchasing it here.  At the time this was written, pine and fir posts cost approx .  It is much more cost effective for you to purchase the long post at your lumberyard versus having us ship one to you.  If your vehicle size is a concern:  these posts can be transported in a medium size vehicle.  We know because we've done it before.  The 8' post can fit either diagonally in a vehicle or also along the passenger door line with some of the post's end sticking out of the front window.  Just be sure to attach a red flag to the post end so that other drivers can see it.  Those flags are provided free at most lumberyards.
    GROUND SOCKET CONSTRUCTION:
THE GROUND SOCKET:  All sockets are made of pressure treated wood for underground use.  All bolts/nuts and washers are provided.  Detailed instructions with illustrations are also provided.  These instructions will share with you how deep to dig the hole, the amount of cement & water needed, tips on mixing cement, how to make sure the system dries level and straight, and other knowledge we've gained through the years of installing these ourselves.  This information will help make the process easier.  IN SUMMARY:  In purchasing this ground socket, all that remains is for you to purchase a 4x4 post and a couple bags of cement at your local lumberyard.  Our detailed instructions will walk you through each step.
