Very large, very wide piece of ebony. The piece is roughly a parallelogram. There is a touch of dark brown on one flat face but it may not go in very deep. There are some cracks along the face that are hard to estimate depth. You can see them in the photos. Without knowing the depth of the splits, it’s difficult to estimate yield. If there were no splits, this might yield a piece up to use 32" x 11" x 3". But with an educated guess about the splits, I think you’re more likely to get a piece 9-10" x 3" x 30", plus a 2" x 4" x 32" inches long, plus a number of 1" x 1" x 32" pieces
Note that all yield predictions are estimates only, based on what I can see from the exterior and my experience. This is also true of the color; once you cut into a piece, you may find a different color or amount of true black than what I can see at the surface. Please note that we do not offer refunds, but I hope you will contact me if you are not satisfied to see if we can resolve any problem.
Why is the wood in this shape? When this is harvested, the sawyer uses a chainsaw like a carving knife, cutting away the sapwood and leaving these irregular shapes. We have imported them whole, eliminating the waste common to other vendors.
Trees From Eden is a supplier of exotic African hardwoods that takes a different approach to the business. At the stump in Africa, these woods cost about the same as common American species, such as Oak. The high cost of exotics is due to the series of 10-15 middlemen who move the product from the forest in Africa to the retailer in the US.
Using our presence in Cameroon, we contract directly with the forester who owns the living trees, to have the wood cut specifically for us and shipped directly to us. This eliminates many of the middlemen, which drives up the cost, and allows us to specify the quality and sawing and handling methods used.
Gabon ebony wood is the most pure black of the lot, but can have occasional chocolate brown seams, especially in the middle of larger chunks. You can pay significantly more for wood that is guaranteed to be pure black throughout. The sap wood is a light gray offering extreme contrasts in color that can add dramatic flare. Ebony weights approximately 65+ lbs per cubic foot. Unlike other hardwoods, Ebony is often sold by weight, not boardfoot.
