domestic shipping. We do ship International, but we do NOT insure International orders unless buyer specifically requests this and we are able to provide an insurance estimate. If an international shipping charge is much more than the actual shipping cost, we will refund the excess so what YOU pay for shipping/insurance is very close to, if not exactly, the ACTUAL shipping costs! This is important for foreign buyers to know as most of our foreign shipping charges are estimates. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and your prompt payment will hasten the turn-around time.
A nice looking Owl Drug Co. bottle. This is about a
2 OUNCE
bottle. These came in 10 sizes from the smallest 2 1/2" tall 1/2 oz., to the nearly 10" tall 32 oz. FULL QUART size, this one is towards the smaller size. You hear about old bottles turning
purple in the sun? The beautiful purple amethyst color of this bottle is the result of being made with manganese in the glass, a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass that acted as a decolorizing agent to turn naturally aqua-colored glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. With few exceptions, only glass made before 1914 will turn purple. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique.
There are different schools of thought on this Gwl bottle. On one hand this looks to be a blatant mistake. As such, it could be that the Owl Drug designer who made the error did it without catching the mistake and went on to register and patent this "Gwl" motif as the Owl Drug Co's Trade Mark, and the Gwl bottles were then produced from this design. This would partly explain it because even though these are scarce to find, these "Gwl" bottles come in nine different sizes and even in different styled bottles. Yet not only glass bottles, but we have also seen paper letterheads, paper labeled bottles, even old newspaper ads that likewise have the "Gwl" spelling of Owl.
Therefore one of two conclusions have been reached:
1) That these were originally a mistake, as considered, and many of them were manufactured before the mistake was realized. In this scenario, they then went on to continue with the Gwl printing on other items as well, so that all of the advertising coming out at that time consistently had the Gwl printing so as to not cause consumer confusion, and to also make it look like no mistake had been made.
2) That these are not error bottles at all, that the "G" in "Owl" is actually a fancy Old English or Victorian style of the letter "O". Everyone has their own opinions yet look closely at the picture, the close up of the Gwl embossing, and then you decide. Whichever the case, these are scarce old Owl Drug bottles, desirable on account of the Gwl embossing,
